Teens strain with physical exertion
Date: August 6th, 2013
A lot of the teens today have mentally and physically broken down. This can be attributed to the fact that most of them collapse after immense pressure.
Teen Survey studying teen reaction to extreme exhaustion
A study has shown that the physicality exerted on teenagers often leads to extreme exhaustion. The study also indicated that a lot of the cases often go unnoticed and are not treated accordingly. This is a very alarming trend that has to be looked into otherwise we risk burning out the potential of the youth, even before they reach their prime.
A sample of ten thousand teens ranging from 13 – 18 years was randomly taken for a survey. Approximately, 3% of this sample showed extreme exhaustion. They experienced this feeling for approximately 12 weeks. None of them got any relief as they were afforded no time to rest due to their busy lifestyle. This eventually resulted in anxiety disorder or depression, which was also the main reason as to why a lot of the teens crumbled emotionally.
There was a ripple effect in this as the very same teens had their problems extended in their social life. They experienced problems interacting at school, at home and with their friends.
Different types of exhaustion among teenagers
Alarmingly, the sample indicated that only 14% of the entire sample ever received special attention in the form of treatment or help. This was a common phenomenon among teens that experienced long term exhaustion. They were mainly identified since they stood out more than the other teens who experienced short term exhaustion. This group was likely to catch the eye of adults because they were conspicuously depressed or anxious. The teen with short term fatigue went unnoticed. This is because they would shut themselves out and control it thus making it hard for a person to detect the depression and fatigue they were struggling with.
Kathleen Merikangas, a renowned researcher, said that the study pointed out to two important findings. The first one stated that extreme exhaustion that lasts even after relaxing is best referred to as a pathological condition. This type of exhaustion hinders the potential of the teenager to perform on various levels, mostly socially and academically. Teens experiencing this kind of exhaustion showed signs because they had a dull appearance and were sickly.
Factors triggering exhaustion among teens
The sample proved without any reasonable doubt that the main reason why teens with short term exhaustion went untreated was because the signs of exhaustion were nonexistent. Other causes of fatigue included workplace issues and medical conditions.
There are a few diseases that are known to bring about extreme exhaustion in teens. Some of them were genetic while others were simply contracted when teens interacted with one another. The common diseases that triggered exhaustion in teens include anemia, colds (flu), insomnia and any heart illness among others.
The workplace was considered a place where teens were likely to get burnt out or tired. The type of job assigned to them or the working hours often made a lot of the teens tire out after a period of time. The environment where they were asked to perform beyond expectations also weighed its toll on them and they ended up tired; both physically and mentally.
